The Æbeløen project is located in the historic Øgade neighbourhood in Aarhus, on a site right next to the city’s botanical garden. Our vision for the project is to create a new quarter with a strong identity that is based on this unique location and relates to the area’s character and feel. The design emerges from what you can call architectural sampling from the surrounding urban context. We mix, combine and reinterpret the Øgade area’s distinctive architectural elements, such as perimeter block structures, slanting roofs, brick facades, green courtyards and cosy streets, to create a new and contemporary Øgade architecture.
The traditional, often introvert, perimeter block is divided in two by a cobbled street that is intended as an active “shared space” with room for traffic, play and common activities. The street forms a vivid artery through the new quarter that in combination with a crossing system of paths opens it towards the city by creating visual and physical connections to the botanical garden.
Æbeløen uses dramatic roof pitches to form a dynamic and varied expression, where dormer windows and large window sections create jumps and surprising variations throughout in the facades. The roof pitches create a recognisable identity and contribute to reducing the building heights as well as ensuring optimal daylight conditions and views.
