The project is a proposal for a combined music hall, blues museum, library and cinema. Blue Velvet is inspired by blues music and the world of books and designed to create an architectural meeting with the open and raw surroundings of the harbour, the beautiful view over the water and the city.
The shape of the building is created by round cut outs that turn the facade into a series of concave curves which entice people into the inner spaces while the sheltered outdoor niches can be used for different activities. The vertical wooden louvers symbolize books on a shelf and their curtain-like shape alludes to the activities of music and performance that take place within the building. As the wooden curtains are pulled up they create entrances and provide views of the activity taking place inside the building.
The inner spaces are organized flat and open, similar to a market hall with no fixed divisions. This ensures maximum flexibility and enables events to grow, shrink and change. Almost like an echo of the exterior geometry, balconies and walls are curved and inside these bubble spaces, the library and the concert hall seamlessly merge.
