The new home for Denmark’s Sport Fishing Association accommodates the association’s administration, as well as an activity centre for sports fishermen, schools and other visitors to the beautiful surroundings in the Vejle river valley. The vision for the building was rethinking the typical association building, which often is separated from the actual activities that the association manages. Instead we designed a building that establishes direct contact between the association and its members by bringing together the administration and activities under one roof. The new facilities on the riverbank allow the association to communicate their activities and initiatives through a diverse range of first-hand experiences related to sport fishing.
The architecture’s formal language is inspired by a fish swimming over stones and vegetation in the riverbed: a wood-clad box rises over the ground and rests on three mounds made of stone, grass and wood respectively. The three mounds pull up the landscape beneath almost into the building, thereby creating varied outdoor spaces for resting, teaching and events. A central light shaft penetrates the box and connects the administration area with a large roofed terrace on ground level, which is surrounded by a classroom and a laboratory. The outdoor facilities include a kitchen and gutting area, fireplaces and a smoker – everything you need to prepare and cook your freshly-caught fish.
